The Church  here, dedicated to S. Peter and S. Paul, was, of  old, appro-

priated to the Abbefs and Convent of Barking, and a Vicarage ordain'd and en-

dow'd, of which they continu'd Patrons till  their Suppreffion; upon which it

came to the Crown, in  which it remain'd, till Queen Eliz. in 6. of her Reign,

Coll. Cl. D.

 W. Grimes.   granted  to Sir Anthony Brown,  Chief-Juftice of the  Common-Pleas, the  whole

Mannor of Cockermouth, a Mannor  in this  Parifh, belonging formerly, I  pre-

fume, to  the  Abby of Barking, and to which, the Church probably  was an Ap-

pendant, with its Appurtenances, to  be held, in capite, by  Knight's-Service

which  Mannor was held by  Wiftan Brown, in 12. of Eliz. and he in 16. of her

Reign, had Licence to  alienate the  fame to John Bullock, together  with the

Advowfon of  the  Church of Dagenham, who  the  very  next  Year, viz. 17. of

her  Reign,  had  Licence  to  alienate  the  Premiffes  to  Will.  Nutbrown,

Will. Cordell, and others, for  the ufe  of  him the  faid John,  which Will.

Nutbrown, or Netbrown, prefented to this Church in 1576. 21. Eliz.

Afterwards the Advowfon of this Vicarage, in 43. Eliz. was granted to John

Coll. Cl. D.

J. Oufeley.   Swinnerton, Senior, and  John Swinnerton, Junior, but  whilft in them, it doth

not appear that they ever prefented; unlefs the Clerk admitted in 1617. at the

Prefentation of Ralph Ward, was by Virtue of a Grant from the Swinnertons, or

one of them, to the faid Ralph, for that Turn.

In 1631. 1640. and 1641. it appears, that the B. of London collated, and as

it is  entred in  the  Regiftry, pleno jure, but  fince  the  Reftauration, it

appears, that  the  Right of Patronage of this Vicarage hath been all along in

               Sir Thomas Darcy, Baronet.

In this Church was buried Sir Tho. Urfwick, Kt. Recorder of London, by whofe

Weav. Fun.

Mon. 601.      means, his  Perfuafions being  forcible with the Citizens, King Edward lV. was

receiv'd into  London  with  general Applaufe, Ann. Reg. l1. who  entring into

the B. of  Londons Palace, by  a Poftern-Gate, there  took  King Henry VI. and

the Archb. of York (George Nevil) Prifoners, and  fent them  both to the Tower

 on Maundy-Thurfday.
