Barking & Dagenham Local History

Where History Is In The Past

Ministers' Account Notes

In 1539-40 a complete survey of the Manor of Barking was drawn up by the Minister for the Court of Augmentations. These were the accounts of William Pownsett, receiver to King Henry VIII. This original is an archaic document, and the oldest surviving list of properties, showing their names and also that of the tenants.

It depicts about 1,000 properties in the Manor of Barking, which included: Barking, Dagenham and Ilford. The Account shows houses and cottages, and  includes:  fields, land, marsh, pasture etc. It should be rememebred that not all the dwellings belonged to the Manor. It is apparent from the Account that about one third lay in each region.

The original can be found in The Public Record Office, catalogue number:  S.C.6., 964. The Essex Record Office also holds a Microfilm copy of this catalogue number: T/P 166/1. The local history library at Valence House, Dagenham, Essex has a transcript from which this was prepared.
